ISO 21001 provides a common management tool for organizations providing educational products and services capable of meeting the needs and requirements of learners and other customers. It is a stand-alone management system standard, aligned with other ISO management system standards (such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001, etc.) through the application of the high level structure. ISO 21001 focuses on the specific interaction between an educational organization, the learner, customers and other relevant interested parties. All requirements of ISO 21001 are generic and intended to be applicable to educational organizations that provide, share and facilitate the construction of knowledge through teaching, training or research, regardless of type, size and the product and service provided. The standard therefore applies to the management system of any organization utilizing a curriculum to provide, share and transfer knowledge.

ISO, International organisation for standardisation is an independent, non-governmental international organization with a membership of about 162 national standards bodies. Through its members, ISO brings together experts to share knowledge and develop voluntary, consensus-based, market relevant International Standards that support innovation and provide solutions to global challenges. ISO has its Central Secretariat based in Geneva, Switzerland.
Certification can be a useful tool to add credibility, by demonstrating that your product or service meets the expectations of your customers. For some industries, certification is a legal or contractual requirement.
Any firm irrespective of the size can go for ISO certification.
ISO certification bodies propose logos for their clients’ use. Usually an IAF logo and ISO certifying body's logo will be published on the certificate if they have proper ISO accreditation. Remember, when labelling a product or system as certified to an ISO standard:
Don't say: "ISO certified" or "ISO certification"
DO say: "ISO 21001:2015 certified" or "ISO 21001:2015 certification" (for example)
The International Accreditation Forum, Inc. (IAF) is the world association of Conformity Assessment Accreditation bodies and other bodies interested in conformity assessment in the fields of management systems, products, services, personnel and other similar programs of conformity assessment. Its primary function is to develop a single worldwide program of conformity assessment which reduces risk for business and its customers by assuring them that accredited certificates may be relied upon. Accreditation assures users of the competence and impartiality of the body accredited.
IAF members accredit certification or registration bodies that issue certificates attesting that an organization's management, products or personnel comply with a specified standard (called conformity assessment).
When choosing a certification body, you should:
• Evaluate several certification bodies.
• Check if the certification body uses the relevant CASCO standard
• Check if it is accredited. Accreditation is not compulsory, and non-accreditation does not necessarily mean it is not reputable, but it does provide independent confirmation of competence. To find an accredited certification body, contact the national accreditation body in your country or visit the International Accreditation Forum.
ISO 21001 does not itself certify organizations. Many countries have formed accreditation bodies to authorize certification bodies, which audit organizations applying for ISO 21001 compliance certification. The various ISO 21001 accreditation bodies have mutual agreements with each other to ensure that certificates issued by one of the Accredited Certification Bodies (CB) are accepted world-wide.
The applying organization is assessed based on an extensive sample of its sites, functions, products, services and processes; a list of problems ("action requests" or "non-compliances") is made known to the management. If there are no major problems on this list, the certification body will issue an ISO 21001 certificate for each geographical site it has visited, once it receives a satisfactory improvement plan from the management showing how any problems will be resolved.
An ISO 21001 certificate is not a once-and-for-all award, but must be renewed at regular intervals recommended by the certification body, usually around three years.
Two types of auditing are required to become registered to the standard: ISO 21001 auditing by an external certification body (ISO 21001 external audit) and ISO 21001 audits by internal staff trained for this process (ISO 21001 internal audits). The aim is a continual process of review and assessment, to verify that the system is working as it's supposed to, find out where it can improve and to correct or prevent problems identified. It is considered healthier for ISO 21001 internal auditors to audit outside their usual management line, so as to bring a degree of independence to their judgments.
The ISO 21001 certificate is issued from a premium ISO 21001 certification body and it can be verified from its accreditation body’s website. Every ISO 21001 certificate comes with a unique certificate number.
The usual time for completing the ISO 21001 certification audit process is 25 days to 3 months and depends upon the size and complexity of your company.
There are numerous case studies conducted all over world in this regard. Most of them found out positive impact. We can provide you on request, the detailed case studies indicating the financial gains of having ISO 21001 certification.
ISO 21001 Certified companies or persons have an obligation to inform the customer of the name of the organization that issued their ISO 21001 certificate. Therefore verification of an ISO 21001 certification should be addressed to the ISO 21001 certification organization in question. Most ISO 21001 certification bodies have an ISO 21001 certificate validity check process available on the homepage of their website. If you know the name of the ISO 21001 certification body and the name of the ISO 21001 certified company or ISO 21001 certificate number then you can easily check if they are ISO 21001 certified by using this validity check process. You may also wish to contact the ISO 21001 member in your country or the country concerned; as they may have a national database of ISO 21001 certified companies. You can file a complaint about an ISO 21001 certified company by following the advice provided in ISO 21001 complaints page.
The cost of ISO 21001 certification mainly depends upon the number of employees in your organisation, your products, number of auditable functions and services. The cost also depends upon the ISO 21001 accreditation body & ISO 21001 certification body.
The ISO 21001 certificate is valid for a period of 3 years provided that the company clears the ISO 21001 surveillance audits which are conducted by the certification body once in every year. ISO 21001 surveillance audit 1 is conducted in the first year after certification and ISO 21001 surveillance audit 2 is conducted in the second year after ISO 21001 certification.
Decide on the process for selection. You might ask for written proposals, conduct interviews by telephone or face to face. Take up references or a combination of all of these methods. Speak to more than one ISO 21001 consultant - you may pick up useful information in the process. Ensure you find out how different ISO 21001 consultants view the project and how they would approach it. Who else would be working on the ISO 21001 project and what relevant experience and skills do they have?
ISO 21001 consultancy fees and associated costs should be clearly set out, discussed and agreed. For example, will they receive a fixed fee or a day rate? Are the ISO 21001 consultants prepared to make part of their ISO 21001 consultancy fee dependent on results and if so, how will these be measured? You should also agree how and when payment will be made. As with any other service, you should also compare ISO 21001 consultancy costs with other ISO 21001 consultants.
The responsibilities of both parties should be clearly set out. Both you and the ISO 21001 consultant should know exactly who is responsible for what so that neither party is suddenly expected to produce significant extra work. Include a comprehensive service-level agreement (SLA) which sets out responsibilities and priorities, defines the ISO 21001 consultancy service they must provide and the level of ISO 21001 consultancy service to be delivered.
Clarify how you want the results of the ISO 21001 consultant's work to be explained to you. Do you want a final report, weekly briefing sessions, a presentation to management or staff, or all of these options? Set out how you will resolve disputes. Explain how both parties can get out of the contract and what will happen if the ISO 21001consultant do. In particular make sure you have a confidentiality clause.
You should communicate fully with your people to explain what the ISO 21001 consultant's brief is. If you don’t, some of your people may resent the ISO 21001 consultant and any additional work that’s required. By the same token, ask the ISO 21001 consultant to provide regular feedback on the project to the rest of your team as part of the ongoing liaison. Plan for the potential impact of the ISO 21001 project. This could include extra workload for your people, additional communications, marketing and PR and a potential boost to your enquiries. Lastly, consider getting a key employee to 'shadow' the ISO 21001 consultant. You could learn a whole lot more than you would by just reading their reports.
If you have agreed to a final report, make sure it covers all of the agreed objectives. Check through the report to ensure there are no outstanding tasks, before signing off and making final ISO 21001 consultancy payment. Plan for success and be sure to publicise the results of the project in-house, to your clients and the outside world. This will help boost motivation and morale and may bring in that extra new business!
This can be a tricky question to answer, but it is important to remember that the majority of organisations have more in place than they think. As an ISO 21001 consultant, we often find our clients are already doing good things, it’s just some processes are not properly formalised or documented. For a typical SME we suggest that, in terms of resource, it will take half a day of week of somebody’s time over an 8-10 week period to create a working Management System that has been internally audited. The person responsible should have a good understanding of how the business works and have influence on the management team. This is important, as it is a requirement of the ISO 21001 standard that the management team is involved to ensure vital for wider buy-in from staff. The first step is, of course, to purchase a copy of the ISO 21001 standard so that you can view the requirements you will need to fulfil in order to achieve ISO 21001 certification. In conjunction with attending a familiarisation or introduction course, this will give you a good understanding of the scale of the task ahead of you, your strategy for ISO 21001 implementation, and the availability of in-house resources before being able to determine whether you need external support.
You may follow the following steps to effectively implement ISO 21001 standard.
Reviewing the ISO 21001 Standard
Achieving ISO 21001 certification is ultimately about fulfilling a number of requirements with evidence. As such, you will need to purchase a copy of the ISO 21001 standard before getting started.
Establishing the Goal for ISO 21001 certification
Implementing an ISO 21001 Management System needs to be an organisation-wide goal developed by senior management and with the buy-in from all. Ongoing momentum will be needed to ensure good habits are maintained throughout ISO 21001 implementation and beyond, so an internal ‘champion’ is desirable. In larger organisations a dedicated team representing various departments is beneficial.
Getting Prepared for ISO 21001 certification
If you are new to the world of ISO 21001 management standards, an introduction training course can be beneficial to give you the confidence and skills needed for ISO 21001 implementation. For further help, you could source an experienced ISO 21001 consultant like us to assist you. We can help with ISO 21001 implementation and it will add value to the process.
Developing a the ISO 21001 Management System
The fundamental part of achieving certification to an ISO 21001 standard is forming the ISO 21001 management system. The ISO 21001 management system comprises of processes for management activities, provision of resources, service delivery, measurement, analysis and improvement. The ISO 21001 certification process will usually take a few months, depending on the size of your organisation. Management time required is approximately half a day per week. An initial ‘Gap Analysis’ review meeting and some helpful sign-posting will ensure you have everything you need for success; thousands of organisations of all sizes and industries have achieved ISO 21001 certification using this method.
Working with your ISO 21001 auditor
The ISO 21001 certification process starts with a ‘Stage 1 Audit’. This is where an ISO 21001 auditor reviews your existing processes and provides you with a report identifying the actions required to meet the ISO 21001 standard. This can be used as a helpful roadmap, so don’t worry if you think you’re under prepared. Many organisations find they already have a number of the required processes in place; they just need better documentation and communication of what processes are required and who has responsibility for what. Once your organisation is ready and has filled the gaps highlighted in the Stage 1 Audit report, an ISO 21001 auditor will visit you again to carry out the ‘Stage 2 Audit’. This will reveal the effectiveness of your ISO 21001 management system and whether it meets all the requirements of the ISO 21001 standard. If your system proves compliant, you will be recommended for ISO 21001certification. The auditor's report will then be checked via an approvals process and, if no anomalies are identified, certification will be officially awarded.
Maintaining ISO 21001 Certification
Continued buy-in from the whole team will ensure you continue to gain the full benefits of ISO 21001 certification. Regular in-house communication and ISO 21001 training will ensure ongoing awareness and engagement. More formally, regular ISO 21001 internal audits must be conducted to ensure requirements continue to be met and for improvement opportunities to be identified. Management reviews must then be conducted to review any required corrective actions or changes for improvement. Annual external ISO 21001 audits are also required.
International Standards make things work. They give world-class specifications for products, services and systems, to ensure quality, safety and efficiency. They are instrumental in facilitating international trade. ISO 21001 has published more than 19000 International Standards and related documents, covering almost every industry, from technology, to food safety, to agriculture and healthcare. ISO 21001 International Standards impact everyone, everywhere.

Selecting and using an ISO 21001 consultant
Undertaking the implementation of an ISO 21001 standard can seem daunting, especially if it is a completely new experience! Taking ISO 21001 certification without any external assistance is possible but the success and effectiveness of ISO 21001 implementation depends on the level of experience you have, especially when resources are an issue. If you like to do the ISO 21001 implementation yourself, our state of art ISO 21001 implementation software will come handy for you. If you’d simply like an experienced hand for assurance, it is worth considering an ISO 21001 consultant like QGlobal. We can offer both online and onsite ISO 21001 consulting services.
Choosing the right ISO 21001 consultant for you
When choosing any potential supplier, one of the first questions to ask is if they have any experience in your sector, and it’s just as important when it comes to ISO 21001 consultants. If ISO 21001consultants are appreciative of the typical management problems your organisation has, their past experience should help to add value. A good ISO 21001 consultant doesn’t just leave you with a compliant system, they should be helping with the engagement of your management team and staff to ensure the system is properly integrated and genuinely adds value. If this doesn’t happen, keeping ISO 21001 certification going over the long-term will become a burdensome inconvenience rather than the business improvement tool it should be. This is one of the areas where QGlobal can make a difference because we always engage ISO 21001 consultants who have in depth industry knowledge.
Retaining control
It’s important to remember that this is your ISO 21001 management system - an ISO 21001 consultant shouldn’t be the only one to see it! Be wary of any ISO 21001 consultant that attempts to impose a ‘one size fits all’ solution. If you don’t retain control of your management system, you will be forever reliant on the ISO 21001 consultant from that point on. As such - from the outset - it’s important to agree what the ‘project’ will entail; generic procedures that are lengthy and not related to your business processes will only lead to frustration and extra cost of maintenance. At QGlobal, we often assists our clients to build their own internal team for the up keeping of ISO 21001 management system after the completion of ISO 21001 certification process.
Cost considerations
As mentioned above, it’s imperative that you agree ISO 21001 consultancy costs before you commit to anything. Most ISO 21001 consultants will visit you free of charge initially; some ISO 21001 consultants even include a free review of your existing processes to see how much work is required in order to the meet the requirements of the relevant ISO 21001 standard. This meeting should give the ISO 21001 consultant enough information to then quote a fee for getting you prepared for a successful ISO 21001 audit from an ISO 21001 Certification Body. Whilst day rates can vary greatly, you can of course reduce costs by choosing a local ISO 21001 consultant in order to minimise travel and sustenance fees. Whilst we are often asked how much ISO 21001 consultancy will cost, there is no typical fee as this will depend on what state you are in now, how complex and large your organisation is, and how much hand holding you are looking for. In this area QGlobal can offer a great pricing.
Guaranteed ISO 21001 certification
Many ISO 21001 consultants will claim ‘guaranteed ISO 21001 certification’. Of course, this is a marketing ploy, but generally it is at least a sign of confidence that the ISO 21001 consultants will get you through the formal ISO 21001 audit successfully! In truth, creating a compliant ISO 21001 management system is not that difficult. However, from our point of view, using an ISO 21001 consultant is not a guarantee you will achieve ISO 21001 certification when the ISO 21001 consultant you hire is not good enough.
Instead, an ISO 21001 consultant should be judged on their ability to help your organisation realise the full benefits. ISO 21001 standards are meant to improve efficiency, co-operation, motivation and service as a result of establishing a system where your people know what to do, and how to do it effectively. This should ultimately save your organisation time and money, whilst being a tool to improve productivity and a can-do attitude. As with any type of ISO 21001 consultant, always ask for references to ensure the above is achieved and do not commit until you are aware of the costs upfront.
Tips for choosing an ISO 21001 Consultant
Although not a requirement of the ISO 21001 standard, some organisations like to use ISO 21001 consultants to help with the implementation of an ISO 21001 standard. Whilst it can take away an element of ownership, choosing an experienced ISO 21001 consultant can add value and make the ISO 21001 implementation that bit smoother. As ISO 21001 consultancy fees can exceed that of the ISO 21001 certification itself, choosing an ISO 21001 consultant should be carefully considered. To help you make an informed choice, we have listed the following 10 considerations, followed by some common FAQs.
